Typical Configuration for Cyrogenic Storage (-50°C and below)
The double containment tank in which an inner steel tank is completely surrounded - base, wall and roof - by an a second exterior concrete tank. The outer tanks serves several functions among which are to contain the liquid in case of a failure of the inside tank and to protect it from outside aggression. Since it is difficult to find an adhesive performing satisfactorily at these temperatures, the generally adopted vertical insulation solution consists of pouring expanded perlite between the walls. The insulation can easily be one meter thick and even more.
Alternatively, the single wall tank with a bund wall built at a distance of 1 to 2 meters from the tank. The bund wall typically has a height that will enable it to store the liquid contained in the tank. The bund also protects the tank against outside aggression (fire, flying objects, etc.). The generally adopted vertical insulation solution is to install insulation on the outer face of the tank.
Typical Configuration for Low Temperature Storage (-50°C to ambient)
The single wall tank without further protection. The wall insulation is directly installed on the outside face of the tank. Wall are generally insulated with a single or multi-layer adhered system.
Typical Configuration for High Temperature Storage (ambient and above)
Tanks operating at high temperatures may hold hazardous or flammable liquids. The chemical and fire resistance of the vertical insulation system becomes critical in these areas. In the case of leakage or spillage of these materials, the inherent closed cell properties of FOAMGLAS® ONE™ insulation will discourage these liquids from "wicking" into the insulation.
